The Technologies of Architectural Survey: A New Comparison Based on the Tower of Sotillo de la Ribera, Burgos
2017
The paper offers an original research about the analysis and the comparison of different techniques of survey concerning the architectural field – image-based and range-based – throughout the development of the theory of errors in order to evaluate reliability and precision of the results. In particular, this analysis will be focused on the tower of the parochial Church of Santa Águeda, a building located in the small village of Sotillo de la Ribera, within the province of Burgos (Spain). The first part of this work, therefore, has been submitted to the implementation of different methodologies, from the direct survey used as a basis, to the procedure to represent graphically the results (e…
Detection of surfaces for projection of texture
2007
Augmented reality is used to improve color segmentation on human's body or on precious no touch artefacts. We propose a technique based on structured light to project texture on a real object without any contact with it. Such techniques can be apply on medical application, archeology, industrial inspection and augmented prototyping. Coded structured light is an optical technique based on active stereovision which allows shape acquisition. By projecting a light pattern onto the surface of an object and capturing images with a camera, a large number of correspondences can be found and 3D points can be reconstructed by means of triangulation.
Survey and Photogrammetric Restitution of Monumental Complexes: Issues and Solutions—The Case of the Manfredonic Castle of Mussomeli
2019
The latest results obtained through photogrammetric restitution enhanced by GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) survey achieved increased levels of accuracy. These survey solutions are used to rapidly obtain a detailed model with an excellent level of accuracy (centimetric) with cheaper equipment. However, the contour conditions are not always favorable for obtaining the best results in a simple way. The work presented in this paper shows the survey and the photogrammetric restitution of the Manfredonic Castle of Mussomeli in Sicily, developed as a part of the PON NEPTIS European Project, aimed at the valorization of Cultural Heritage (CH). This case is a typ…
Preclinical models in oncological pharmacology: limits and advantages
2021
A wide range of experimental tumor models, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages, is nowadays available. Due to the inherent differences in their complexity and functionality, the choice of the model is usually dependent on the application. Thus, to advance specific knowledge, one has to choose and use appropriate models, which complexity is largely dependent on the hypotheses to test, that is on the objectives. Whatever the model chosen, the complexity of cancer is such that none of them will be able to fully represent it. In vitro tumor models have provided important tools for cancer research and still serve as low-cost screening platforms for drugs. The improved understanding o…
UAV and GPR Data Integration in Glacier Geometry Reconstruction: A Case Study from Irenebreen, Svalbard
2022
Although measurements of thickness and internal structure of glaciers are substantial for the understanding of their evolution and response to climate change, detailed data about polythermal glaciers, are scarce. Here, we present the first ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurement data of Irenebreen, and high-resolution DEM and orthomosaic, obtained from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. A combination of GPR and UAV data allowed for the reconstruction of the glacier geometry including thermal structure. We compare different methods of GPR signal propagation speed determination and argue that a common midpoint method (CMP) should be used if possible. Our observations reveal that…
Heritage and technology: novel approaches to 3D documentation and communication of architectural heritage
2015
In the past few years we have seen a drastic increasing of image-based modeling (IBM) techniques to get high quality reality-based 3D models. The low costs of these techniques as well as their attractive visual quality have lead many researchers and professionals to invest their energies and resources in several tests. The use of IMB in the field of cultural heritage is mostly exploited in applications such as documentation, digital restoration, visualization, inspection, planning, AR/VR, conservation and design. One of the strengthen of multi-view stereo techniques is the possibility to capture millions of points in a very short time and to get a 3D textured polygonal model that can be eas…
3D VIRTUAL CH INTERACTIVE INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR A SMART WEB BROWSING EXPERIENCE FOR DESKTOP PCS AND MOBILE DEVICES
2018
Abstract. Recently, the diffusion of knowledge on Cultural Heritage (CH) has become an element of primary importance for its valorization. At the same time, the diffusion of surveys based on UAV Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technologies and new methods of photogrammetric reconstruction have opened new possibilities for 3D CH representation. Furthermore the recent development of faster and more stable internet connections leads people to increase the use of mobile devices. In the light of all this, the importance of the development of Virtual Reality (VR) environments applied to CH is strategic for the diffusion of knowledge in a smart solution. In particular, the present work shows how, s…
The project for the “Galleria Oretea” by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda and other unbuilt “passages” in Palermo
2022
The contribution aims to conjecturally reconstruct and analyze the unrealized project by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda regarding the “Galleria Oretea” for Palermo. It is an urban project of considerable size and impact, which should have provided the city of Palermo, in the old town, with a gallery in the style of the Parisian “passages”, inspired by the contemporary creations of Milan and Naples. Thanks to the recent cataloging and publication of the entire corpus of drawings in the Damiani Archive, a reinterpretation of the project was carried out through a three-dimensional recomposition of the immersed in the places where it was originally conceived. Two other projects were developed for the…
3D models of humanoid soccer robot in USAR sim and robotics studio simulators
2008
This paper describes our experience in the simulation of humanoid soccer robots using two general purposes 3D simulators, namely USARSim and Microsoft Robotics Studio. We address the problem of the simulation of a soccer match among two teams of small humanoid robots in the RoboCup Soccer Kid-Size Humanoid competitions. The paper reports the implementation of the virtual models of the Robovie-M humanoid robot platform in the two simulators. Robovie-M was the robot used by our team "Artisti" in the RoboCup 2006 competitions. This paper focuses on the procedures needed to implement the virtual models of the robot and in the details of the models. We describe experiments assessing the feasibi…
VIRTUAL REALITY FOR HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE
2019
Abstract. This article shows a first step in the development of an immersive virtual tour of the Cathedral of Palermo, entering the fields of Digital Cultural Heritage and Edutainment. Its purpose is to help people to gain knowledge about the site, highlighting the complex stratifications that have characterized its history. The development of the project has been possible thanks to different phases of work: surveys were initially carried out by laser scanning, then assembled and processed to obtain the 3D model of the current state; at the same time, the model of reconstruction was processed in several phases, based on historical, archival and iconographic sources; both models were, later, …
